Blood alcohol testing is a UK court approved method of analysis performed at a UKAS 17025 laboratory facility. Used for legal matters, we recommend it is used in conjunction with a hair alcohol test to provide a comprehensive overview of alcohol consumption.

How does blood alcohol testing work?

Alcohol enters the blood through the process of digestion, via the stomach and small intestine. Alcohol is water soluble so is readily distributed through the body to all major organs via the bloodstream. However, the liver is exposed to greater levels of alcohol as blood is received direct from the stomach.

The blood alcohol test produces two reports for both haematology and biochemistry analysis. The haematology (full blood count - FBC) report indicates alcohol intake by measuring the volume of red blood cells. While the biochemistry report provides results of liver function (LFT test) and carbohydrate deficiency (CDT test).

About blood alcohol testing

When to use the blood alcohol test

Blood alcohol testing is primarily used for legal purposes, and usually performed in combination with a hair alcohol test. For example, this can include proving abstinence from alcohol to a Family Court, or Social Services.

In addition, a court can also instruct for a blood alcohol test to be performed in conjunction with the hair alcohol test. This is to provide a more comprehensive analysis of an individual's alcohol consumption.

The costs of blood alcohol testing in London

The cost of a blood alcohol test starts from just £230. However, we will always recommend that the test is performed in conjunction with a hair alcohol test. This will provide a comprehensive analysis of alcohol intake, and the total cost of this combination of tests is £680.

How to book an appointment for a blood alcohol test in London

To book a blood alcohol test in London, please call 0800 988 7107. You will be put through to a Clinical Account Manager who will help you find your nearest sample collection location near you. In addition, they will guide you through the booking and hair testing process and answer any technical questions you may have.

Important blood alcohol testing timeframes

The CDT analysis covers a period of approximately 2 weeks. In combination with the LFT and FBC analysis, we can determine excessive alcohol consumption over a longer period. In addition, when the blood alcohol test is performed with a hair alcohol test, which covers up to a 6-month period, the most accurate long-term overview of a person’s alcohol use can be provided.

Blood alcohol testing sample collection

At the sample collection appointment, a certified phlebotomist will guide you through the test documentation, obtain and verify your ID, and collect your blood sample. All of which is performed under strict chain of custody policies and procedures, to ensure sample integrity and an audit trail. This is critical to being able to use the laboratory results for legal purposes.

Blood is collected using a sterile intravenous blood kit. Two samples are obtained, one for the full blood count, the other for the LFT and CDT analysis. In addition, if a hair alcohol test is also being performed, your hair sample will be collected at the same appointment.

You will be asked to sign consent to have your blood samples collected and analysed by the laboratory for your blood alcohol test.

Finally, your blood sample is secured using tamper-proof measures, and transported securely for processing.
