How does Peth alcohol testing work?
Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) is a direct alcohol biomarker that provides accurate indication of recent regular alcohol consumption. PEth analysis distinguishes heavy versus moderate or occasional consumption of alcohol. PEth only forms in the presence of Ethanol, meaning it is a direct marker for alcohol intake. It is eliminated from the body in about 30 days. As a result, the window of detection is often given as one month. Also, age, gender, health, or previous alcohol issues do not impact on the results.

When to use the PEth alcohol test
PEth alcohol testing is accepted by courts in the UK as evidence for alcohol abstinence. For example, this can include proving abstinence from alcohol to a Family Court, or Social Services. Also, it is usually performed in combination with a hair alcohol test to provide a comprehensive overview of alcohol intake over a specific time period.
In addition, blood alcohol testing can also be undertaken if requested by the court.

Important PEth alcohol testing timeframes
PEth analysis has an effective window of detection of 3 - 4 weeks. However, in the case of chronic use or alcohol 'binge sessions', detection can be longer than 4 weeks. This is something that should be considered when choosing the PEth test to prove abstinence.
PEth alcohol testing sample collection
At the sample collection appointment, a certified collection officer will guide you through the test documentation, obtain and verify your ID, and collect your blood spot sample. All of which is performed under strict chain of custody policies and procedures, to ensure sample integrity and an audit trail. This is critical to being able to use the laboratory results for legal purposes.
We use a lancet to collect a blood spot sample from the tip of a finger. This is less invasive than intravenous blood collection and means we can offer greater availability for this test. We collect 4 blood spots to ensure sample viability for the laboratory. In addition, if a hair alcohol test is also being performed, your hair sample will be collected at the same appointment.
You will be asked to sign consent to have your PEth blood spot samples collected and analysed by the laboratory.
Finally, your PEth blood spot sample is secured using tamper-proof measures and transported securely for processing.
